When Should a Child
First See an Orthodontist?
Although a family Dentist will often recommend
that an Orthodontist be consulted near the time that all baby teeth
are out, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends that
a child first visit an Orthodontist at age 7.
This is useful for several reasons. First,
the child, the parents and the Orthodontist can begin to build their
relationship. Second, the Orthodontist can help the parents and
the child see into the future, dentally. Most patients who come
in at age 7 are not in need of any treatment at that time but are
generally seen once or twice a year to monitor their progress until
the determination is made that they do not need Orthodontics or
that they are ready for treatment. Occasionally, though, early treatment
is used to make a correction that will improve healthy eruption
of permanent teeth and jaw growth.
There is no charge for children under the age of 18 for an initial examination
with Dr. Sputh. This is a service that we are happy to provide for
you, your family and also for your family dentist.
